Class 1 MELT Program ICBC Approved

Mandatory entry-level training (or MELT for short) is a training requirement from the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure and ICBC for new class 1 commercial driver’s license applicants. This training requirement is for new class 1 trucking industry applicants and aims to make BC's highways safer for everyone.

 

British Columbia's class 1 MELT program for new drivers of heavy commercial vehicles sets out a minimum required number of in-cab/on-road driving hours, in-yard hours and theory or in-class hours.

 

ICBC is the regulatory body for driver training schools and instructors in BC and has consulted with the commercial driving industry, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General to finalize the MELT curriculum.

 

This Program includes:

  • 47 Hours of Theory
  • 50 Hours of Driving
  • 19 Hours of In-Yard Around The Vehicle
  • 18 Hours of Off Road Maneuvers.
  • 6 Hours of Flexible Practice
  • Total 140 Hours

Class 3 License Course

Our Class 3 Program provides students with the necessary skills to drive garbage trucks,

dump trucks, heavy duty tow trucks, recycling trucks.
This program includes:

15 Hours -Driving

Class 4 Unrestricted Course

There are two class 4 Category, allowing drivers to operate passenger vehicles under restricted or unrestricted licence. Both Category are focused on the safe transportation of people and require the same elevated level of skill and competency.


A class 4 unrestricted license may be used to drive vehicles with a total passenger capacity of 25 (including the driver), such as school buses, special activity buses, and vehicles used to transport people with disabilities such as HandyDART.

 

The unrestricted license will allow you to drive any vehicle that is included within the restricted category as well.
